Realizing who you are is grace. Self-realization, the realization of the true self marks the end of the ego identity – an old identity you learned and were “programmed” to be. It also marks the beginning of a new you – your true self, who you are when you have realized yourself.
Realizing who you are is a shift in consciousness that happens on the inside. And it takes time to live as your true self and make the inner change a reality in the physical world.
If you want to realize who you are, I believe you will
I believe, and even trust, that if realizing your true self is what you want more than anything, it will happen.
But I also know that it will cost you everything else: your former identity and your former life – because it is an entirely different reality.
Looking at the world through the eyes of the ego and the world through the eyes of your true self are two different ways of perceiving reality. So to live as one, the other one has to go.
The shift in consciousness you experience when you realize who you are is a shift in perception. From that moment, you perceive life differently.
When you have realized who you are beyond the conceptual world, you can’t go back and put on one of your old masks (that belong to the ego) or walk back into the old conceptual reality as if nothing happened, because you have seen through that reality.
You can live as who you are in the world, but it takes time to integrate your new state of consciousness to do that.
The true self is not who you are on the spiritual path
If you are on the spiritual path, you may have had many shifts in consciousness and perception before, but the shift that occurs when you realize who you are is different.
The realization of the true self is not another insight to add to your former understanding of life or another piece to add to the awakening puzzle. It is not an extension of the spiritual path or the next step on that path. Instead, the realization wipes out that path.
So, it doesn’t just wipe out the ego and the old ways of that identity. It also wipes out the spiritual path. The path disappears because, at the destination, there is no path. It is an entirely different reality.
And yet, that reality is so close that you may wonder how you looked past it for so long.
It takes time to integrate the realization
Realizing who you are is grace. It is beautiful and liberating and the ultimate freedom. It is the end of the old and the beginning of something new.
And the inner shift happens in an instant. The moment you realize who you are, the change has occurred, and your life will not be the same.
But since the shift is so different from your old perceptions of reality, it takes time to understand and integrate this new way of being into your daily existence.
It takes time to know how to be in the world now.
Finding people who can relate to how you experience the world can also be difficult. And just putting your experience into words can take years, even if you live that way daily.
It is not a state of confusion; it is the opposite. But all words add some distance to the experience of being who you are, so they are not the direct experience in themselves.
After some time, you may be able to use words to explain your reality or become comfortable with not talking about it at all.
But either way, it takes time to integrate the new reality into your way of living and to be yourself even in the external world.
